£99,950 70ft Orion Narrowboats tug style trad. 2001 (substantially upgraded 2008). 4 berths. Orion's distinctive tug style traditional narrowboat shells have always been among the most stylish on the cut. This boat has been partially refitted by Rob Shone (formerly of Stoke on Trent boatbuilders) in 2008 and the owners have upgraded the electrical system substantially - the original boat had no provision for 240v mains. The owner, a professional diesel engineer, has fully rebuilt the Lister JP2 which looks as pristine as the day it was built back in 1936. The interior is sumptuous, with extensive use of solid ash and a traditionally decorated half boatman's cabin with scumbling and traditional motifs by the legendary Dave Moore. The balance between comfort and practicality is near enough perfect - a spacious almost 16ft saloon to relax in and a utility room with nearly 9ft of full height wardrobe and cupboard space plus a washing machine and a freezer. It is not often that a boat of such superb quality becomes available and viewing is highly recommended.

£69,500 58ft Barry Hawkins cruiser stern. 2007. 4 berths. Apparently it took a degree of persuasion before Barry Hawkins - well known and highly regarded for his eye-catching Northwich Trader trads - agreed to build a cruiser stern narrowboat. So well-liked was the result that he went on to build several more. The quality of the steelwork is immediately obvious - good clean lines throughout. The interior fit out by the owners is in the increasingly popular “reverse” lay out style and makes great use of American light ash to give a feeling of light and space. Walking through from the bow of the boat you enter the bedroom, which can either be used as two single berths or made up into a king size double, followed a stylish walk through bathroom complete with full size bath. The galley follows, with a Belfast sink and rich oak worktops and a built-in wine rack. Next is a Pullman dinette which can convert into a small double berth and finally the open plan saloon, with a large sofa and Squirrel multi fuel stove for those cooler evenings. The large 8ft stern deck provides a good outdoor space for friends to socialise when either cruising or just relaxing. Moorings in small private Midlands marina available subject to marina owner's approval.

£64,950 60ft Aqualine Manhattan semi-trad. 2005. The Polish built Aqualine range caused something of a stir when they first appeared on the UK waterways. But they have proved very successful with their highly modern interior fit outs and good quality steelwork. This is a semi trad version with a number of additional features such as forward cratch cover and aft “pram” hood protection, high spec inverter/charger and a larger 42hp engine unit fitted. The interior has been kept in excellent order throughout with the ash finish a combination of solid timber and ply. The large saloon area is ideal for loose furniture while the open plan galley offers solid granite worktops. The bathroom area contains a fully tiled shower unit and a ceramic pump out wc. The bedroom has an extending double berth with a washing machine fitted into a cupboard beneath the rear step. The boat could comfortably sleep 4 persons and is ideal for longer term cruising.

£49,500 55ft 6in trad. 2004. 2 berth. Stylish shell with long 6ft 5in bow thought to have been built by Hankelow Boatbuilders (ex Gary Gorton). The first 15ft of cabin steelwork is designed to look like a clothed part of the boat with steep sloping sides and a top plank effect. The remaining cabin area is that of a conventional narrowboat and has been neatly fitted out by the first and current owner. The boat's equipment has been kept simple but is ideal for a live aboard or long term cruising craft, with a permanent double, well equipped galley, domestic size shower cubicle. A large cast iron barrel stove set in the saloon provides heating.

£24,500 40ft Peter Nicholls/First owner trad 1982. 2 berths. Delightful small narrowboat with a shell from a builder of high quality and reputation. There is a lot of character in this craft with its smooth running Enfield twin cylinder engine. The first owner fitted out the boat with a lot of care and thought, right down to the custom built armchairs. The aft cabin has a raised platform which makes up into a double berth. The boat has not seen a great deal of use in the past year and some minor cosmetic tlc would bring her back to being an eyecatching narrowboat ideal for weekends and holiday breaks, or as a compact liveaboard. Solid fuel stove with back boiler runs radiators for heating; full gas cooking facilities.

£69,950 70ft Hankelow Boatbuilders/PJ Wright/RW Davis & Son trad 2006. 6 berths: permanent double, "under & over" bunks, double on Pullman dinette. The shell by Hankelow Boats bears many similarities to Gary Gorton's much admired boats, which is of no surprise as Gary Gorton sold his company to the owner of Hankelow. The external steelwork is well fabricated with a fine bow and neat lines. Fitted by PJ Wright Boatfitters with finishing touches by RW Davis & Son, Eilish is a full size narrow boat designed for living aboard and longer term cruising and with space for family. There is a permanent double berth and two bunks in a separate centre cabin, which could be adapted as an office or additional utility area if desired. There is a well equipped galley and a utility cupboard containing both a freezer and a washing machine. The interior woodwork in ash coupled with laminate wood flooring throughout gives a pleasant light and airy feel. A 42hp Vetus Mitsubishi diesel unit provides more than sufficient power for navigating both canals and rivers.

£64,950 58ft G&J Reeves/Barnowl Narrow Boats semi trad. 2006. Classic G&J Reeves quality steelwork with their trademark canoe bow hull. The fit out is by Barnowl, a Black Country based builder with a growing reputation for stylish modern joinery at the luxury end of the market. Light oak finishes throughout create a sense of space and both galley and bathroom are of thoroughly modern design. Bought as a live aboard the boat has spent virtually all its time on a marina mooring and has seen little cruising - just 117 hours on the clock. A change in the owners’ circumstances forces the sale of this ideal go-anywhere size long term cruising craft. She is ready to move on to and go.

The boat is of the highest specification with Hurricane 9kW central heating, a kitchen fit for a Michelin starred chef, king size cross bed and simply superb quality joinery as one would expect from Phil Abbott at Wharf House. Built as a live aboard boat but perfectly capable of long term cruising (which the owners have done an amount of) the boat has up to six berths - one permanent cross double and two make up doubles on dinette and saloon seating. 960aH AGM battery bank, top of the range inverter charger unit, Bosch domestic appliances - the list is considerable. Even the cratch and aft "pram hood" covers are made of the same material Mercedes Benz use for their soft top cars!

The moorings are transferable according to the owners and the conditions of their mooring agreement. The mooring can accommodate a broad beam boat without additional fees. UNDER OFFER £56,000 60ft Converted Small Woolwich - Built by Harland & Wolff, converted by Malcolm Braine, refitted by Barry Hawkins. 1935. If there was a Crufts for narrowboats then the pedigree of Adrastea would probably walk away with all the prizes. Based on the stern half of the Small Woolwich butty, Satellite, converted by the renowned Malcolm Braine at Norton Canes, then completely gutted in 2005 and refurbished with a new steel cabin top and complete refit by Barry Hawkins. The boat is gas free using a full size multi fuel Esse range for cooking and heating. Solid oak plank flooring throughout with the cabin sides lined in ash, a spacious walk through bathroom area, permanent double berth. UNDER OFFER £44,950 60ft Dave Clarke/Professional joiner. 1995. 2 berth. Although the joiner who fitted out this boat is not known it has been professionally executed with a lot of thought going into the layout. The saloon is one of the largest I’ve seen - in excess of 17ft in length with a delightful fireplace feature set halfway along one side. Similarly the bathroom has been cleverly designed to maximise space. The present owners have cruised the boat around the system continuously for the last two years but are now returning home to family in Australia. SOLD £44,950 60ft Tony Francis trad. 1998. Burton-on-Trent based Tony Francis is well regarded in the narrow boat world for his tugs and traditional style boats - because they look the part. They have long sweeping elegant lines combined with rugged steelwork. The interior is equally robust - lined out in an African wood called panga panga which is so densely grained it will probably outlive the steel! A large saloon has plenty of space for loose furniture and a bench seat at one end converts into an occasional double berth. In the engine room a robust Perkins D3 diesel provides propulsion and is operated by traditional speedwheel and push/pull gear shift. The bedroom aft sports a large wardrobe and a solid fuel boatman’s range. The use of portholes completes what is a fine example of a traditional style boat.

£29,000 40ft Heritage cruiser stern narrow boat 1994. Just one owner from new who is now reluctantly forced to retire from boating at the grand old age of 84. He fitted out the boat using his skills as a cabinet maker and the lay out is very well planned in the shorter space a 40ft narrowboat offers. Removable aft deck canopy provides shade and shelter. Individual features include a French green enamelled antique multi fuel stove. There are no permanent berths, but a Pullman type dinette creates a double in the forward cabin, and there are two single chair beds in the saloon. The boat was some way ahead of its time in that it utilises the increasingly popular reverse layout with the saloon at the aft end of the boat. There is also full gas central heating, TV, good storage. The boat is of an easily handled size and would prove excellent for weekend boating and holidays. A 3 cylinder Volvo Penta marine diesel provides the propulsion.

£37,950 58ft Nene Narrowboats trad. 2002. 4 berths. Nene Narrowboats was a low volume builder who produced a number of narrow boats over the years. The fit out is highly functional with well planned space and storage, making a good reasonably priced live aboard - which is what the current owner has used the boat for. A large saloon contains free standing furniture (which may be included in sale subject to negotiation) and a multi fuel stove with a good sized open plan galley beyond. A walk through bathroom gives full width space and allows for a bath that is close to a standard full domestic size. The bedroom provides excellent cupboard space - a wardrobe at one end and a 4ft wide full length hanging area at the other. A Thornycroft Mitsubishi unit provides propulsion.

£35,950 60ft Aldridge Boat Builders cruiser. 1991. This is a BCN built boat with good solid lines in the cruiser stern style. Good sized living area - more than 14ft saloon - with a homely feel throughout. The boat has some high spec additions: a Kabola diesel boiler provides central heating while an earlier Alde lpg boiler still functions and runs the central heating too if required. A multi fuel stove is set in the aft end of the saloon to provide a more even spread of heat cocooned 5kVA generator will also provide more than enough 230v powered to run any appliance desired. There are currently two single berths side by side in the aft cabin and if desired a sofa bed could be added to the saloon to provide two further temporary berths. Other extras include a folding “pram hood” cover over the stern deck, providing weather protection and a useful place for muddy boots, wet dogs, etc. The owner is selling as he has taken up a new job in Devon.

£29,500 37ft Marque Narrowboats narrow beam all steel launch. 1991Very unusual launch style narrow boat by the respected builder, Marque Narrowboats. It is believed that just four were made in this style - all in steel and to a good specification. As one would expect with this builder, the interior joinery is of excellent quality, with much attention to detail and storage. There is a fully fitted galley with fridge, hob and oven; solid fuel stove (and caravan-style gas wall mounted gas stove as well), two make up double berths, dual station steering positions - either within the aft cabin or outside on the aft deck. The steering is a hydraulic system. The owner, a waterways’ enthusiast for many years, has sadly passed away, hence the sale.

REDUCED £29,500 45ft Stenson Boatbuilders/Midland Canal Centre semi trad. 2000. Midland Canal Centre have been building boats together with their sister company, Stenson Boatbuilders, for 20 years at their base on the Trent & Mersey Canal. They have developed a deserved reputation for designing durable craft with elegant steelwork and neatly crafted well thought out interior layouts. Sparks is a good example in the popular semi trad style and of an easy-to-handle length, with a light and spacious fit out in oak. The equipment has been kept simple - the electrics are a 12v system with gas cooking in the galley. The aft cabin can be left set up as a permanent double berth if desired. The exterior paintwork has faded and this is reflected in the price, but otherwise this is an excellent boat. It is understood that the mooring is available to the buyer.

SOLD £55,950. 58ft G&J Reeves/Blue Haven Marine semi trad. 1999. 4 - 6 berth "go anywhere" sized narrow boat based on a shell of proven quality. The interior fit out is by Blue Haven Marine who over the years have become known for their quality and attention to detail. Throughout the boat is lined with light oak panelling, with a spacious saloon and L-shaped dinette area. The owners have had the boat from new and after 9 years of exploration are sadly hanging up their windlasses and retiring to land. They have kept the boat in spotless condition and meticulously maintained the craft in all aspects. You could, in all honesty, eat your dinner off the floor of the engine hold. The engine is one of the canal world’s favourite workhorses, the Beta 1903 diesel. Cruised during the season each year, the boat is a proven long term and live aboard vessel and has been upgraded recently with a new fridge in 2007 and a Kabola central heating boiler (more than £3000 when new).
