£54,950 54ft John Horton (ex Les Allen)/Owner trad 2001. 3 berth. A classic traditional narowboat from the Les Allen stable - the shell was fabricated by Les Allen's shell builder, John Horton, who carried on producing shells after Allen's Oldbury yard closed in 1998. The rugged yet stylish lines that characterised Les Allen craft mark this boat out as one of great pedigree - the impressive authentic josher style bow and the long tapered stern swims produce excellent handling qualities. The owner (one from new) fitted out the boat to a professional standard to produce a warm and cosy interior. The Squirrel stove is more than adequate to heat the boat throughout although there is an authentic solid fuel Epping range in the boatman's cabin as well. A lovingly maintained gleaming Lister HR2 occupies pride of place in the engine room. The interior has been carefully planned to maximise storage in a boat of easy to handle go anywhere dimensions.

£63,500 58ft Barry Hawkins cruiser stern. 2007. 4 berths. Apparently it took a degree of persuasion before Barry Hawkins - well known and highly regarded for his eye-catching Northwich Trader trads - agreed to build a cruiser stern narrowboat. So well-liked was the result that he went on to build several more. The quality of the steelwork is immediately obvious - good clean lines throughout. The interior fit out by the owners is in the increasingly popular “reverse” lay out style and makes great use of American light ash to give a feeling of light and space. Walking through from the bow of the boat you enter the bedroom, which can either be used as two single berths or made up into a king size double, followed a stylish walk through bathroom complete with full size bath. The galley follows, with a Belfast sink and rich oak worktops and a built-in wine rack. Next is a Pullman dinette which can convert into a small double berth and finally the open plan saloon, with a large sofa and Squirrel multi fuel stove for those cooler evenings. The large 8ft stern deck provides a good outdoor space for friends to socialise when either cruising or just relaxing. Moorings in small private Midlands marina available subject to marina owner's approval.

£45,950 54ft Tim Tyler/Nimbus Narrowboats trad 2000. 3 berth. A beautifully maintained boat that has been cherished by the owners from new. One of Tim Tyler's renowned quality stylish shells fitted out by Nimbus Narrowboats with great attention to detail. Every cupboard, every drawer is custom made and it would be hard to make greater use of the internal space, so well has it been planned. A comfortable saloon with solid fuel stove leads to the galley which has a twin seat raised dinette that converts into a single berth. The bathroom contains a full size sit down shower unit, pump out wc and ceramic basin. The bedroom has a permanent double berth with a chest of drawers and a double wardrobe built in. Propulsion is delivered by a Beta Marine BV1505 38hp diesel. The boat was professionally repainted by North Kilworth Wharf in 2009.

£84,950 62ft Stoke on Trent Boat Building josher tug 2005. 4 berth. A top drawer example of Stoke on Trent Boatbuilding's high quality steelwork and joinery. Sweeping josher bows on the tug style narrowboat with close attention to detail - replica rivets and recessed back panels with traditional scumbling all contribute to this impressive craft. The interior is a fine exposition the boat fitter's craft - custom built units, hand made butcher's block worktops. In the engine room sits a vintage Gardner 4LK diesel (the same unit as used in the Royal Navy mini subs in WW2). There is also a replica boatman's cabin complete with solid fuel range and drop down double berth and traditional decoration. The bathroom is full width. Saloon side hatches with clear acrylic inserts provide create an interior filled with light. A lot of modern spec has been included - a built in 3kw diesel powered generator in an acoustic cocoon, 1.5kW inverter, marine battery charger, electric bowthruster.

UNDER OFFER £47,950 57ft GT Marine/Stem to Stern cruiser style 2004. 2/4 berth (second double in saloon with sofa bed option). Mr B II is a cruiser sterned narrowboat fitted out in a modern style by Stem to Stern. Extensive use of ash creates an interior which is both light and spacious. The large saloon area has freestanding furniture in the shape of two comfortable leather reclining swivel chairs with footstools, and a breakfast bar at the galley end with two folding bar chairs. The galley, corridor and walk through bathroom have slate quarry tile flooring throughout. Used for cruising in season, the owners preferred to have diesel central heating for occasional use, thus the solid fuel stove has never been used. All in all, a stylish modern fit out in a good quality shell although the exterior paintwork is a little dull. That engine favoured by most hire fleets, the Isuzu, provides propulsion.

REDUCED £59,950 70ft Hankelow Boatbuilders/PJ Wright/RW Davis & Son trad 2006. 6 berths: permanent double, "under & over" bunks, double on Pullman dinette. The shell by Hankelow Boats bears many similarities to Gary Gorton's much admired boats, which is of no surprise as Gary Gorton sold his company to the owner of Hankelow. The external steelwork is well fabricated with a fine bow and neat lines. Fitted by PJ Wright Boatfitters with finishing touches by RW Davis & Son, Eilish is a full size narrow boat designed for living aboard and longer term cruising and with space for family. There is a permanent double berth and two bunks in a separate centre cabin, which could be adapted as an office or additional utility area if desired. There is a well equipped galley and a utility cupboard containing both a freezer and a washing machine. The interior woodwork in ash coupled with laminate wood flooring throughout gives a pleasant light and airy feel. A 42hp Vetus Mitsubishi diesel unit provides more than sufficient power for navigating both canals and rivers.

£35,000 Peter Nicholls (Yachtbuilders) Ltd inspection launch 1997. 4 berth. Peter Nicholls built just a handful of these inspection launches and, as you would expect from this builder, the craftsmanship is second to none. The hull has 45 degree chines to a 4ft bottom plate which allows the boat to glide almost effortlessly through the water. Steering is by a hydraulic wheel from a forward position in the cockpit. The interior is cleverly designed to maximise the restricted space offered by a 33ft boat. The boat makes an eye-catching impression and is easy to manoeuvre - it can be turned around in much of the canal. The present owner, who commissioned the boat, has used it for weekend trips and holiday breaks and the engine has clocked just over 1000 hours at the time of our inspection. There is some cosmetic tlc required - the inspection window frames have leaked in the past and although running repaiurs have been made it might be wise to remove and reseal them. The aft doors also need rubbing back and re-varnishing. This is reflected in the asking price of what is an outstanding and unusual canal boat.

£39,500 50ft Barton Boat Services/Jack Sumner trad 1995. 5 berths: permanent double, make up double on L shaped settee in saloon, make up single in utility cabin. Distinctive trad built with a shell by Jack Sumner, a shipwright who built smaller craft for the Royal Navy. This diversion into the world of narrowboats displays true boatbuilding skills which are particularly evident in the construction of the bow. The homely interior fit out by Phill Barton of Barton Boat Services has been planned to optimize space and storage, including a full height wardrobe unit. Not many 50ft boats have a separate utility room for example. For sleeping there is a permanent double and a further make-up, double on L-shaped seating in the lounge. The galley offers a 4 burner gas hob with separate oven/grill and a full size 12v fridge. There is also a 12v freezer in the utility room. Two roof mounted 60W solar panels back up the electrical charging system.

UNDER OFFER £48,950 55ft Liverpool Boat Co Cruiser stern 2005. 4 berth. Liverpool Boats have for many years been produced decent attractively fitted craft at very keen prices. This example is in the popular cruiser stern style with a host of extras - built in 240V engine driven 3.5kVA generator, 1.8kW inverter, attractive galley with curved worktops, full size shower. Both central heating and a solid fuel stove ensure comfort. There is a permanent double berth and a further make up double on the raised Pullman dinette. The boat has been used primarily as a place to stay during the working week by the present careful owner and the engine hours are very low as a consequence. He is only now selling as his work is relocating away from the waterway system.

£84,950 70ft Stowe Hill Marine/G&J Reeves trad 2006. 6 berth. A classic boat from the highly regarded Stowe Hill Marine stable and one of the last to utilise the woodworking skills of Stowe Hill's founder, Pete Hill. The Reeves shell is a josher style with low sleek lines and replica rivets from bow to stern. The interior joinery is superb: rich cherry lined interior with strong attention to detail, a faithfully replicated boatman's cabin traditionally scumbled and decorated, with Beta tug engine in the engine room adding to the authenticity of this exceptional boat. The specification of the boat is considerable. Fully equipped galley, washing machine, 2.5kW high quality inverter, 3.5kW generator plus a 880aH battery bank - the boat is equipped for long term cruising in comfort independent of the need for hook up to mains electricity. The hydraulic drive system means that the boatman's cabin retains full headroom height, and a hydraulic bowthruster is fitted to aid manoeuvrability.

£34,950 52ft Weltonfield/Steelcraft semi trad 1991. 2 berth. An easy to handle sized semi trad which at 52ft helps keep down annual licence and mooring costs yet offers more than adequate space and accommodation for weekends, holidays and longer term cruising. While the boat is not rusting badly, the paintwork is tired and a full repaint is needed. This is reflected in the price. Inside is a very neat and tidy fit out which has a cosy feel to it. The saloon contains comfortable upholstered swivel chairs with a solid fuel stove in the corner. At the galley end there is a breakfast bar with stools tucked beneath the counter. The galley has a four burner hob with oven and grill, plus a 12v fridge. This is followed by a bathroom and then a wc in its own cabin beyond. The bedroom offers a full height wardrobe and also an airing cupboard containing the hot water cylinder. A 1000W inverter provides 230v when away from mains hook up.

SOLD £29,500 40ft Eastern caravans & Narrowboats cruiser stern. 2000. 2 berths. This is a neat and tidy cruiser stern narrowboat built by Eastern Caravans and Narrowboats who have produced numerous canal craft over the years - including most of the Canal Time hire fleet. The owner has kept the boat in good order throughout and the two berth accommodation with the well equipped galley makes this an ideal boat for high days and holidays. The length is easy to handle and also helps to keep down mooring and licence costs. The boat is heated by a centrally located solid fuel stove set in a tiled hearth and surround. The bathroom features a good sized shower tray with a modern Thetford cassette wc installed. Propulsion is delivered by a Thornycroft marinised Mitsubishi diesel unit.

SOLD £39,950 48ft Evans & Sons/Pat Buckle josher style trad. 1999. 2 berths. Nicely proportioned distinctive Mike Heywood (Evans & Sons) shell with a josher bow, recessed aft cabin panels and replica rivets. The internal fit out by Pat Buckle has been carefully planned to maximise storage and has a pleasant light feel. The interior of the boat gives the impression of a size considerably greater than 48ft and I have seen 60ft boats with a lot less storage. Sitting in the engine room is a Petter twin cylinder PJ2W diesel which has been fully rebuilt and is the pride and joy of the owner. The boat is fully equipped for both holidays and extended cruising and could double as a cosy live aboard. The Kabola diesel stove is a very reliable and tested unit which can tick over 24/7 and keep the boat warm throughout, although there is a 4 radiator central heating system which can be used as an alternative. There is an 1.8kW inverter fitted to provide mains power when on the move. There is a shortage of good quality well presented boats like this on the market at present. Don't miss out.

SOLD £79,950 57ft Jonathan Wilson/Jarvis Narrowboats trad. NEW. Classic Jonathan Wilson shell fitted out to a high standard by Jarvis Narrowboats with extensive use of solid ash offset by painted interior panels. The quality of this boat has generated a lot of boat fitting work for Jarvis from impressed boat owners who have viewed it. At 57ft this is a “go anywhere” boat into which a great deal of thought planning to maximise comfort and storage has gone. The builders, a husband and wife team who have their own narrowboat, have applied their experience of living afloat to this as yet unnamed craft, creating a massive 16ft living area with an open plan galley beyond. A full width walk through bathroom cleverly utilise dead space under the kitchen work top to provide a home for a washing machine. The bedroom contains a full height large wardrobe. This is an ideal boat for long term cruising and living aboard. A 40hp Barrus Shire diesel provides the propulsion.
